Bughouse (hands down the most popular chess variant) is my specialty and stress that in order to get good at it you should first be very familiar with all chess rules, otherwise you’ll easily be confused, especially when you notice the super-fast movements due to the sheer nature of the game. However, once you fully understand bughouse and start playing, it’s quite common to notice an improvement in your chess game, due to bughouse tactics.
The way the pieces move in Bughouse is exactly like chess, except it is a 4-player game (2 vs 2) and you are allowed to drop pieces that you get from your partner on any unoccupied square on your own board. The following are all 6 rounds of the 2009 U.S. Team East Bughouse Championship in Parsippany, NJ which was strongest tournament ever: pairs included chess masters, FIDE masters, and even International Masters! In the end after all the smoke cleared & action ran through the start of the next day, my partner and I prevailed, as we finished an undefeated 6-O despite many strong teams.
Also recently added is footage from the 2010 U.S. Team East Bughouse Championship where we faltered 1-game due to my lack of practice! As you will notice from all the vids below, time and initiative are the two most important aspects of this awesome variant!
